With WWDC 2026 just days away, rumors about macOS 27 are heating up. Apple's next major operating system update, expected to be unveiled on June 8, will focus on stability and AI integration. After macOS Tahoe, the last version compatible with Intel processors, Apple is finally cutting ties with the past.
Siri Becomes a Standalone App
The most anticipated feature is a revamped Siri that could finally make the assistant truly useful on the Mac. Rumors point to a dedicated Siri app with a darker interface and better integration with the notch. The same enhanced AI coming to iOS 27 will allow users to create shortcuts using natural language directly in the Shortcuts app.
Liquid Glass Gets a Subtle Redesign
The Liquid Glass design language introduced with Tahoe didn't work as well on the Mac, especially with excessive transparency and shadows. Apple is planning a slight redesign to improve readability without abandoning the overall aesthetic. Expect minor refinements, not a full revert.
AI Everywhere: Photos, Desktop, and Safari
Artificial intelligence permeates every corner of the system. The Photos app will feature Extend and Reframe tools to generate content beyond the image borders and change perspective. Image Playground will produce more lifelike images, while Safari will automatically organize tabs into groups. Writing Tools gain grammar check and advanced rewriting capabilities.
Snow Leopard-Style Performance Focus
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has described this update as a "Snow Leopard-style" release, emphasizing bug fixes and performance improvements. A more stable and responsive system is exactly what Mac users have been asking for. There are also whispers of hidden touchscreen support, hinting at the future OLED MacBook Pro with touch expected by late 2026.
End of an Era: No More Intel, Rosetta 2 on the Way Out
macOS 27 marks the end of the line for Intel Macs. Installation will require at least an M1 chip. More importantly, Rosetta 2 will still be available in macOS 27 but will be removed in the next version. Apps relying on Rosetta must be updated to native Apple Silicon by fall 2027 or become unusable.
Apple's tradition of naming macOS after California landmarks continues. The hashmoji file shared on X hints at "Big Bear," but "Emerald Bay" would be a fitting nod to the Snow Leopard theme. The official name will be revealed Monday. The bottom line is clear: macOS 27 is a turning point, leaving Intel behind and embracing an AI-first future.
