Apple Watch Ultra 4 Foldable iPhone and AirPods Pro 3 The Challenges and Opportunities of May 2026

[2026-05-18] Author: Ing. Calogero Bono

May 2026 is shaping up to be a dense month of developments for Apple. Three nearly simultaneous stories shed light on Cupertino's ambitions for the coming fall. On one side the future of the sports watch with a deep redesign and a new blood pressure sensor. On the other the engineering challenge of the first foldable iPhone. And finally a promotion linking the credit card to flagship earbuds. Together these fragments draw a complex strategy made of hardware innovation, health, and customer loyalty.

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 Redesign

According to supply chain sources the next Apple Watch Ultra 4 will undergo a complete redesign. DigiTimes reports a significant exterior change with eight sensors arranged in a ring pattern on the back of the device. The most anticipated feature is blood pressure monitoring. Apple would introduce a hypertension notification function that analyzes how blood vessels respond to each heartbeat using the optical sensor already on the back. The functionality is currently under FDA review. Unlike the hypertension notification already present in watchOS 26 which relies on 30-day analysis periods this new implementation could represent a more refined and clinically validated version. The optical heart rate sensor is the same but the algorithm changes deeply. The direct beneficiary of these upgrades is Taiwan Asia Semiconductor Apple's exclusive sensor component supplier which expects large volume orders as early as July. The redesign could boost Apple Watch shipments by 20 to 30 percent compared to 2025. After blood pressure the next step will be noninvasive glucose monitoring a capability Apple has been pursuing for years pending government approval.

The Foldable iPhone Ultra Challenge

On the smartphone front Apple faces significant hurdles with its first foldable model likely called iPhone Ultra. According to leaker Instant Digital trial production has stalled due to hinge reliability issues. The opening and closing mechanism is failing Apple quality standards under prolonged high frequency use. The hinge has been the core of foldable development for years. Apple plans to use liquid metal components an amorphous alloy with a disordered atomic structure more resistant to bending than titanium. Dongguan EonTec is the exclusive supplier. Although Apple has used this material in small parts like SIM ejector pins this would be its first application in a critical mechanical component. The leaker suggests the problems should not delay the fall launch although DigiTimes reported in April that production was running one to two months behind schedule. Mass production is expected in July. Apple has accepted some screen crease as inevitable but tests show the device can maintain a visually crease-free surface over the long term. The 7.8 inch inner display and 5.5 inch cover display are powered by an A20 chip C2 modem and side Touch ID sensor. The estimated price is around 2000 dollars. The device will be announced alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models in September though availability could slip to December.

Apple Card Promotion and AirPods Pro 3

To complete the picture Apple launched a new promotion today to attract customers to its credit card. New Apple Card holders who purchase AirPods Pro 3 by June 15 can earn up to 250 dollars in Bonus Daily Cash over ten months. The catch is that for each month from July 2026 to April 2027 they must make at least ten purchases using the card. Each purchase must be at least one cent and the AirPods purchase does not count toward the monthly threshold. AirPods Pro 3 cost 249 dollars and were launched in September 2025 alongside the iPhone 17 lineup. This promotion tightly links hardware and financial services pushing users to make Apple Card a daily tool. It is not available to existing cardholders or anyone with a pending application. The purchase must be made directly from Apple online or in store. Refurbished products third-party retailer purchases and bulk orders are excluded. Paying entirely with an Apple Gift Card or Apple Account balance is also prohibited. Payment can be made in full or via Apple Card Monthly Installments. Returning the AirPods may forfeit the offer.

These three stories show how Apple is balancing hardware innovation health financial services and overcoming engineering challenges.
